In this episode of Husky Highlights, Mrs. Nicholson shares important reminders about the Monday professional development day and Tuesday homework deadlines. You’ll hear a recap of our exciting Spirit Week and House Sorting Party, plus updates on the upcoming Blake’s Orchard field trip. Fourth grade families will learn about our poetry unit wrap-up, Topic E math quiz, and social-emotional learning focus, while fifth grade families will get updates on Esperanza Rising, decimals practice, Native American studies, and science fair progress. We close with a parent shoutout and encouragement to keep practicing our September core value: cooperation.

Hello Marygrove families, and welcome back to another episode of Husky Highlights, where we share highlights for both fourth and fifth grade. Your children are supported by a wonderful team of educators: Dr. Walker, Ms. Yates, Ms. Walker, Ms. G, and me, Mrs. Nicholson. Before we dive in, a quick reminder that there will be no school for scholars on Monday, September 30th, as staff will be in professional development.
Candice Nicholson (Jackson)
Because there is no school for scholars on Monday, homework will be due Tuesday, September thirtieth. This week, scholars only need to complete the odd-numbered problems in mathematics.
Chapter 2
Upcoming Blake’s Orchard Field Trip and Grade Updates
Candice Nicholson (Jackson)
What a week we had! Spirit Week was a huge success, and our House Sorting Party was a blast. Our scholars showed such energy, pride, and joy as they celebrated their house identities. Thank you to everyone who participated and helped make the event so special.

Permission slips went home for both fourth and fifth grade field trips. We are heading to Blake’s Orchard on Thursday, October tenth. The cost is thirteen dollars for each scholar and thirteen dollars for each chaperone. Chaperone sign-up and volunteer clearance links are posted on Class Dojo for your convenience. We are looking forward to a fun day of learning and fall activities!

In reading, our fourth grade scholars have spent the past month diving into Love That Dog by Sharon Creech. They explored rhythm, repetition, and what makes a poem unique, and they compared poetry to prose. Last week, we focused on structure, rhythm, and imagery, and scholars took a mini quiz on parts of speech. We will wrap up with our first End of Unit One Assessment this Friday. In mathematics, fourth graders are currently on Eureka Math Lesson thirteen, so we encourage scholars to get to at least to lesson thirteen on Zearn over the long weekend. That is correct, your scholar can finish those Zearn lessons at home. Some scholars are behind, so this is a great time to close any gaps. Our Topic E quiz, covering Lessons thirteen and fourteen, will be on Wednesday or Thursday. In Social Studies, we are exploring the focus question: How can I build my social-emotional learning skills to empower myself and others?
Candice Nicholson (Jackson)
Our fifth grade scholars have continued reading Esperanza Rising by Pam Muñoz Ryan, a powerful story about human rights and the journey of a young girl growing up during a time of great change. We are focusing on text structure and using evidence from the text to answer questions. Please remind scholars to read for twenty minutes each night and log their reading minutes. In Social Studies, we are learning about Native American culture and traditions of the indigenous people. We begin our deep dive by studying the Eastern Woodland area.In mathematics, we continue to explore manipulating decimals, and in science, we are making progress on our science fair projects. For more information, check Ms. G’s Class Dojo page.

A huge parent shoutout goes to Ms. Sorsby for donating journals to our fourth grade scholars. Your generosity is helping us launch our writing journey in such a special way. We are excited to begin capturing our fourth grade experiences in these journals this week.
