Embracing Autumn in the Classroom

Hello Marygrove families, and welcome back to another episode of Husky Howl, where we share important weekly highlights for both fourth and fifth grade. Your scholars are supported by an incredible team of educators: Dr. Walker, Ms. Yates, Ms. Walker, Ms. G, and Mrs. Nicholson. October is in full swing and we are excited for an autumn full of rich learning, stronger relationships, and meaningful experiences for our Husky scholars.

School Updates

Thank you to all of the parents and guardians who showed up for Parent Teacher Conferences on Wednesday. Your presence and partnership means everything.

This Monday, scholars are invited to wear Honolulu blue as we cheer on the Detroit Lions. And on Friday, scholars may show their spirit and wear college pride gear — either Michigan State University in green and white, or the University of Michigan in maize and blue.

Also, a reminder that our teachers are beginning PTHVP home visits this month. If you would like your child to be “Boo’d” with a friendly fall surprise during a home visit, please reach out to your scholar’s teacher to schedule.

In reading, we have officially completed Love That Dog. Scholars are finishing their mid-module assessment, where they are writing about what inspired the main character, Jack, to begin writing poetry. They are now beginning to draft original poems as we prepare for our Poetry Slam on Monday, December fifteenth. Please continue encouraging your child to practice writing and reading aloud with confidence.

In social studies, our focus question is: How can we create a healthy democracy? Our supporting question is: What are rights and responsibilities? A social studies project will be sent home this Tuesday.

In science, scholars are beginning the editing phase of their Science Fair research papers. Please look out for a writing rubric from Ms. Yates — this paper will also count as a writing grade in English Language Arts. Feedback will be sent through Microsoft Word in Clever.

In mathematics we have begun Module 2 Topic A on Metric conversion. We will be assessing topic A on Monday and Topic B on Friday. Please make sure that your scholar is keeping up with there Zearn lessons at home. They should be done with lessons one, two and three.

ClassDojo points continue to be awarded for living our house core values, and our scholars are now beginning to shout each other out for acts of leadership, kindness, and teamwork.

Now moving on to fifth grade. In mathematics, scholars are working on decimal multi-digit multiplication and solving measurement word problems using decimal operations. Homework this week includes Module Two, Lessons eleven through fifteen, odd-numbered problems only. The Topic C quiz will take place on Wednesday.

In science, scholars are studying Chapter Three, exploring the question: Why do we see different stars at different times of the year? Science Fair research paper drafts should now be turned in for feedback, and revision windows will begin soon.

In reading, we have officially finished reading Esperanza Rising by Pam Muñoz Ryan. We are working on our writing peice where we are analyzing characters' reactions to the inequities in this novel. Please remember that scholars should read for twenty minutes nightly and log their minutes. Reading Logs and a book report on a book of your choice will be due tomorrow for homework.. In social studies, scholars are studying the culture and traditions of the indigenous people of North America. We had a great time learning and exploring as we celebrated Indigenous Peoples Day last week.
