Chapter 1
A Note of Gratitude and Important Announcements
Candice Nicholson (Jackson)
Happy Sunday families, and welcome back to another episode of Paws and Progress. I want to begin today by thanking you for your grace and understanding. I experienced a loss in my family last week with the passing of my grandmother, and I will be taking a few days later this week to be with family. This may include Thursday and Friday.
Candice Nicholson (Jackson)
During my absence, scholars are expected to follow all classroom routines, show respect, and continue learning with the substitute. Your support in reinforcing this at home means a lot.
Candice Nicholson (Jackson)
I also want to share a reminder that tickets are currently on sale for the TSM Skating Party at Northland Roller Rink on Thursday, December eleventh. Tickets are eight dollars and can be purchased in advance. We are looking forward to a fun evening of community connection.
Candice Nicholson (Jackson)
Finally, we will begin I-Ready Mathematics testing next week. Our scholars have worked hard, and they are well prepared for this mid-year checkpoint. As always, a good night of rest and steady attendance will support their success.

5th Grade and ELA Module 2
Candice Nicholson (Jackson)
As a fifth grade team, we have decided to move the Esperanza Rising Celebration of Learning to a date after Winter Break. This shift will allow scholars, teachers, and families extra time to prepare and ensure a meaningful experience for everyone. In the meantime, scholars should continue practicing their monologues at home to build fluency, expression, and confidence.
Candice Nicholson (Jackson)
In English Language Arts, we are excited to begin Module Two, titled Biodiversity in the Rainforest. In this unit, scholars will explore how living things depend on each other and their environments to survive, with a special focus on the biodiversity found in rainforests around the world.
Candice Nicholson (Jackson)
Our focus text for this module is The Most Beautiful Roof in the World by Kathryn Lasky. This engaging informational text takes readers high into the rainforest canopy to learn about the plants, animals, and scientists who study this unique ecosystem.
Candice Nicholson (Jackson)
The Scholastic Book Fair will begin on Monday, December fifteenth. More information will be coming soon.
Candice Nicholson (Jackson)
Families, please remember that all scholars should return their yellow homework folders on Monday. Fourth graders should return the assignments from their Succeed books, and fifth graders, who did not have ELA homework last week, should return their folders in order to receive their new assignments.
Candice Nicholson (Jackson)
As we enter this season of giving and empathy, let's remember to share words of encouragement, perform acts of kindness, and embrace the spirit of giving. Together, we can make the next two weeks of school impactful, purposeful, and reflective as we close out this part of the year.
Candice Nicholson (Jackson)
